⇒COLCOT(H)AR, (COLCOTAR, COLCOTHAR)subst. masc.
CHIM. Oxyde ferrique de couleur rouge obtenu artificiellement par calcination du sulfate de fer dont il constitue le résidu, utilisé pour le polissage du verre et des métaux, ainsi que dans la préparation de la peinture à l'huile. Synon. rouge d'Angleterre, rouge de Prusse, rouge de Venise. Glace polie. On frotte la face doucie avec un tampon de feutre et du rouge à polir (colcotar), jusqu'à ce qu'elle soit devenue transparente (A.-M. VILLON, Dessinateur et imprimeur lithographe, 1932, p. 548) :
